God later changed his name to Abraham. One of his ancestors was Shem who was one of Noah’s sons. Noah was the man whom God saved together with his family when God destroyed the world with flood water.

Abram’s father was a man named Terah who was 130 years when Abram was born.

Abram was a native of a Chaldean city of Ur. The city was in the land of Shinar near the present junction of Rivers Euphrates and Tigris. The people of Ur were idol worshipers.

Abram Went To Live in Haran

Abram’s father took Abram from Ur and started going to the land of Canaan. He also took Abram’s wife named Sarai and Abram’s nephew named Lot. They however stopped in a place called Haran and they settled there.

God Calls Abraham

The Bible Story tells us that after sometime, Abram’s father Terah died and God called Abram and told him to move out of Haran. This was what God said to Abram “Leave your country, your relatives, and your father's home, and go to a land that I am going to show you.

I will give you many descendants, and they will become a great nation. I will bless you and make your name famous, so that you will be a blessing.

I will bless those who bless you, but I will curse those who curse you. And through you I will bless all the nations.”

Abram Left His Home and His Relatives

After God spoke to Abram, he didn’t disobey God. He immediately left his home and relatives in Haran and started to travel to where God told him.

He was 75 years when he started the journey and he went with his wife Sarai and his nephew Lot. They took all the wealth they had acquired in Haran and all their slaves.

Abram Arrives Canaan

Abram later arrived in Canaan. He traveled through the land and then came to a place called Shechem. In Shechem, he set up his camp besides one oak tree called Oak of Moreh. At that time, a people called the Canaanites were living in that land.

While Abram was there, God appeared to him and told him that He would give the land of Canaan to his descendants. Abram built an altar and dedicated it to God.

Then he traveled to one hill country that was located between two cites called Bethel and Ai. He built another altar their and worshipped God.

Abram Moves to Egypt

There was famine in the land of Canaan when Abram was there. The famine was very severe and Abram had to feed his large family and look after his livestock. So He decided to go to Egypt to live there for some time. He traveled with his wife. Remember that his wife’s name was Sarai.

Abram’s wife was a very beautiful woman. This made him to believe that if he got into Egypt, the Egyptians would kill him and take his wife. So he told Sarai to tell the Egyptians she was his sister.

When Abram crossed the border and entered Egypt, the Egyptians saw that Sarai his wife was beautiful. Some of the officials of the king of Egypt told their king about Sarai and her beauty. So they took her to the king’s palace.

Because of Sarai, the king of Egypt treated Abram well. He gave Abram flocks of sheep and goats including donkeys, cattle, camels and slaves.

God Punishes King of Egypt

But God was angry with the king of Egypt because he took Abram’s wife. So God sent a terrible disease upon the king and his household. The king of Egypt had to quickly send for Abram and asked him why he didn’t tell him that Sarai was his wife. He took Lot with him when God told him to go and live in the land of Canaan.

Abram was a very rich man. He had sheep, goats and cattle as well as silver and gold.

There was a famine which made Abram to go and stay in Egypt. When he came back to Canaan, he traveled to the southern part of the land. He later left there and moved from place to place moving towards a place between two cities called Bethel and Ai.

He had earlier camped in that place and built an altar to the Lord before he went to Egypt.

Abram’s nephew, Lot also had sheep, goats, cattle as well as his own family and servants.

Because of the great number of livestock Abram and Lot had, there wasn’t enough pasture for the two men to stay together and feed their animals.

So quarrel broke out between the men who took care of Abram’s animals and those who took care of Lot’s animals.

The quarrel got so bad that Abram said to his nephew Lot, “We are relatives, and your men and my men shouldn't be quarreling. So let's separate. Choose any part of the land you want. You go one way, and I'll go the other.”

After Abram said this, Lot looked around and saw that the Jordan Valley in the direction of one city called Zoar had plenty of water. The land was like the garden God planted in one place called Eden when He created the first man and woman.

Lot chose the whole of Jordan Valley and moved away from Abram towards east of Canaan. This was how Lot parted with his uncle Abram.

So Abram stayed in the land of Canaan while Lot moved his tents and settled in a place near a city called Sodom.

Abram Rescues His Nephew Lot

At this time, war broke out in the region of Canaan. This valley is now called the Dead Sea.

The five kings had been under the control of King Chedorlaomer for twelve years. In the thirteenth year however, they rebelled against that king.

The rebel kings of Sodom, Gomorrah, Admah, Zeboiim and Bela (also called Zoar) prepared for battle in the Valley of Siddim. The fought against kings of Elam, Goiim, Babylonia and Ellassar.

The four kings defeated the five kings. The kings of Sodom and Gomorrah tried to run away from battle but they fell into pits that were filled of tar. The pits were in the Valley of Siddim. The other three kings that were with the kings of Sodom and Gomorrah escaped.

The four kings took everything that was in Sodom and Gomorrah including the food.

Because Lot who was Abram’s nephew was living in Sodom, they also took him ad all his possessions.

A man escaped and reported the situation to Abram.

Abram had allies whose names were Mamre, Eshcol and Aner. The three men were brothers.

When Abram heard that his nephew had been captured, he called all the fighting men in his camp. The men were 318.

Abram pursued the four kings until he caught up with them at a city called Dan. Abram divided his men and attacked the enemies by night and defeated them. He chased them as far as a place called Hobah which was north of a city called Damascus.

Abram recovered the goods which the defeated kings had taken. He also brought back his nephew Lot with his possessions and all the women and other captives.

Melchizedek Blesses Abraham

After Abram returned from his victory over the four kings, the king of Sodom went out to meet him in one valley called the Valley of Shaveh (It is also called King’s Valley).

Another king whose name was Melchizedek came to Abram and brought him some bread and wine. Melchizedek was the king of a city called Salem. He was also a priest of God Most High.

King Melchizedek blessed Abram and said, “May the Most High God, who made heaven and earth, bless Abram! May the Most High God, who gave you victory over your enemies, be praised!”

Abram took one tenth of all the goods he had recovered from the enemy and gave it to King Melchizedek.

Abram Rejects King of Sodom’s Gifts

When the king of Sodom met Abram, he told Abram to give him back all his people, but he could keep for himself all the goods he recovered from the enemy.

Abraham rejected the offer and told king of Sodom, “I solemnly swear before the LORD, the Most High God, Maker of heaven and earth,
that I will not keep anything of yours, not even a thread or a sandal strap. Why don't you sleep with my slave girl? I myself gave her to you, and ever since she found out that she was pregnant, she has despised me. He went on to tell her that she would give birth to a son and she should name the child Ishmael because God had heard her cry of distress. The angel then informed her that her son would live his life like a wild donkey.

The angel concluded by saying to Hagar, “He (Hagar’s son) will be against everyone, and everyone will be against him. He will live apart from all his relatives.”

After the angel left, Hagar used another name to refer to God who had spoken to her through His angel. Their descendants also continued to disobey God.

One of their descendants murdered his own brother. The name of the murderer was Cain and the person he murdered was Abel.

All kinds of wickedness continued to increase on earth. People thought of evil things all the time.

God was sorry that He had ever made human beings and put them on earth. God was filled with pain. So He decided that He would wipe out the human race from the face of the earth.

God decided to destroy all human beings and animals including creatures that crawl on the ground and even the birds.

The Man Named Noah

When God decided to destroy what He created, He found that there was a man who behaved in a moral and honest way. He was not a wicked man. The man’s name was Noah.

Noah was the only blameless person living on earth at that time. He was close to God and served God.

Noah had three sons whose names were Shem, Ham and Japheth.

There was much corruption and violence on earth. So God said to Noah, “I have decided to put an end to all mankind. I will destroy them completely, because the world is full of their violent deeds.”

Noah Builds a Boat

God did not want to destroy Noah and His family. So He told Noah to build a very big boat. The boat was a real big one.

The boat was 450 feet long, 75 feet wide and 45 feet high.

The boat had three decks inside – a lower, middle and upper decks.

God said to Noah, “I am going to send a flood on the earth to destroy every living being. Everything on the earth will die, but I will make a covenant with you.

Go into the boat with your wife, your sons, and their wives.”

God also had plans to save some of the animals and birds. He told Noah to take a male and a female of every kind of animal and bird and bring them into the boat.

God further told him to take enough food for his family and for all the animals and birds that would stay with in the boat.

Noah obeyed God and did everything God commanded him to do.dumamahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11143830068352858567noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5248422437746175479.post-87669445687773574402009-03-19T06:18:00.000-07:002009-03-19T06:20:27.857-07:00Bible Story - God Shortens People’s Lifetime

After God created the first man and woman (Adam and Eve), the population of people continued to multiply. The people spread out to all parts of the world.

Because Adam and Eve disobeyed God, they died and all their descendants became subject to die. This means that they cannot live for ever but must die whether young or old.

Adam’s descendants during and around the time of Adam used to live for a long time till God said,

“I will not allow people to live forever. They are mortal. From now on they will live no longer than 120 years.”

So God cut short the length of time individuals stayed alive on earth. That’s why we consider an 80 year old person as having lived a long time. It is not common to find someone who lived to be 120 years.

There is another statement in the Holy Bible which shows that man’s age was further reduced. The statement says, “Seventy years is all we have — eighty years, if we are strong.
Yet all they bring us is trouble and sorrow Life is soon over, and we are gone.”

We have a very short time to stay on this earth. So we should use that time to serve our Creator and humanity. This is because the time will soon come when our hair would turn white and we would hardly be able to drag ourselves along. All our desires would be gone and our bodies would return to the soil of the earth and our breath of life would go back to God who gave it to us.

Genesis 6:3; Psalm 90:10;
Ecclesiastes 12:1, 5, 7.

Questions:

• Who was the oldest man that ever lived on earth?
• At what age did Noah have his three sons?
• Why did God say that Human beings will not live forever?
• What was the age God fixed for humans to live?
• Another scripture cut down that age. The man’s name was Methuselah.

Men Who Lived Very Long on Earth

These are names of some men in the Holy Bible and how long they lived before they died.

• Adam - 930 years
• Seth - 912 “
• Enosh - 905 “
• Kenan - 910 “
• Mahalalel - 895 “
• Jared - 962 “
• Enoch - 365 “
• Methuselah - 969 “
• Lamech - 777 “
• Noah - 950 “
• Shem - 600 “
• Arpachshad - 438 “
• Shelah - 433 “
• Eber - 464 “

Do you observe that Enoch was much younger than the rest? He didn’t die young. He didn’t even die. So He told the man that he could freely eat the fruit of every tree in the garden.

He however commanded Him not to eat the fruit of a particular tree. That tree was one of the trees in the middle of the garden. The tree was the tree that gives knowledge of what is good and what is bad. God said to the man, “You must not eat the fruit of that tree. If you do, you will die the same day.”

How God Created Woman and Gave Her to the Man

After God created a man, He looked at the man and saw that it was not good for the man to remain alone. So He decided that He would make a helper who is just right for the man.

First of all, God brought all the birds and animals to the man so that He would see what the man would name them.

The man named all the birds and animals. But God saw that none of them was a helper that was just right for the man.

This made God to make the man to fall into a very deep sleep. While the man was sleeping, God opened up his side and took one of the man’s ribs and closed up the opened side.

God used that rib to form a woman and brought her to the man.

When the man saw the woman he was very excited and said, “At last, here is one of my own kind — Bone taken from my bone, and flesh from my flesh. ‘Woman’ is her name because she was taken out of man.”

It is because God took a rib out of the man to create the woman that’s why the woman is the bone taken from the man’s bone, and flesh taken from his flesh. And God said that it is because of this would a man leave his father and his mother and become joined with his wife, and the two of them would be united as one.

So no human being must separate a husband and a wife because God has joined them together.

Genesis 2:4-25; Matthew 19:5, 6.

Questions:
1. He served God. God told him to go to a land God promised to give him and his descendants.

While he was in the land, his wife Sarah gave birth to a son named Isaac when she was 90 years and Abraham was 100 years. God blessed Abraham in everything he did.

After sometime, Abraham’s wife, Sarah died. Abraham himself was very old. So he, decided that it was better for him get a wife for his son Isaac while he himself was still alive. He sent for his oldest servant who was in charge of all he had.

Abraham’s Servant Made a Vow to Him

Abraham told his servant him to place his hand between his (Abraham’s) thighs and make a vow.

(When a person places his hand under another person’s thighs and makes a vow, it means the vow would be unchangeable.)

Abraham told his servant that he wanted him to make a vow that he wouldn’t choose a wife for his Isaac from among the people of Canaan where Abraham was living.

Abraham told his servant to go back to the country where Abraham was born and get a wife for Isaac from among his relatives.

But the servant asked Abraham, “What if the girl will not leave home to come with me to this land? Shall I send your son back to the land you came from?”

Abraham answered, “Make sure that you don't send my son back there!”

Abraham then told his servant that God brought him (Abraham) from his father’s home and from his relatives and promised to give the land of Canaan to his descendants. (Canaan was the land Abraham lived with his son, Isaac).

Abraham assured his servant that God would send His angel to go with him so that he would get a wife for his Isaac.

He however, said to his servant, “If the girl is not willing to come with you, you will be free from this promise. But you must not under any circumstances take my son back there.”

So Abraham’s servant put his hand between his master’s thighs and made a vow to do what He had asked him.

Abraham’s Servant Searches for a Wife for Isaac

Abraham’s servant went to the city where Nahor who was Abraham’s brother had lived. The place was located in Northern Mesopotamia.

When the servant arrived there, he made the camels to kneel down at a well outside the city. It was evening and the women of the city came out to draw water.

Abraham’s servant prayed that God would give him success and keep the promise He (God) made to Abraham. The servant said, “LORD, God of my master Abraham, give me success today and keep your promise to my master.

Here I am at the well where the young women of the city will be coming to get water.

I will say to one of them, ‘Please, lower your jar and let me have a drink.’ If she says, ‘Drink, and I will also bring water for your camels,’ may she be the one that you have chosen for your servant Isaac. If this happens, I will know that you have kept your promise to my master.”

A Beautiful Girl Comes to Draw Water

Before Abraham’s servant finished praying, a young girl came to draw water. Her name was Rebecca. She was the daughter of a man named Bethuel who was the son of Abraham’s brother, Nahor and his wife Milcah.

Rebecca was very beautiful and young. She was still a virgin.

Rebecca went to the well, filled her water jar, and came back.

Abraham’s servant saw her and ran to her. When he met her, he said, “Please give me a drink of water from your jar.”

Rebecca quickly gave him some water. After drinking, she told him that she would bring water for his camels to drink.

She poured the water into the animals’ drinking trough and ran to the well to get more water. She continued doing so until all the camels had drunk enough water.

Abraham’s servant was watching her in silence while she was doing this. He wanted to know if God had made his journey successful.

Abraham’s Servant Gives Rebecca Expensive Gold Presents

When Rebecca finished watering Abraham’s servant’s camels, he took an expensive gold ring and put it in her nose and put two large bracelets on her wrist.

Then he asked Rebecca who her father was and also asked her if there was accommodation in their house for his men and him to spend the night.

Rebecca told him that her father was Bethuel the son of Nahor and Milcah. She said that there was plenty straw and food at their house for the camels and they had accommodation for the man and his men.

Abraham’s Servant Gives Praises to God

When Abraham’s servant heard what Rebecca said, he knelt down and worshipped. He praised God who had kept His promise to Abraham by leading him to Abraham’s relatives.

Abraham’s Servant Meets Rebecca’s Relatives

Rebecca quickly ran home and told her family all that had taken place.

She had a brother named Laban. When he heard the story, he ran to the well where Abraham’s servant was.

Laban had already seen the nose ring and bracelets his sister was wearing and had heard Rebecca narrate what the man told her.

When he got where Abraham’s servant was, and saw him at the well standing by his camels, he asked him to come home with him, saying that he would take care of him and his camels. So Abraham’s servant went with him.

Laban unloaded, fed and gave the camels straw. Then he brought water for Abraham’s servant and his men to wash their feet.

When it was time for them to eat, Abraham’s servant said, “I will not eat until I have said what I have to say.”

Laban told him to go ahead and say what he wanted to say.

Abraham’s Servant States His Mission

Abraham’s servant told Rebecca’s relatives who he was. He told them how God had greatly blessed Abraham and made him a rich man.

He informed them that God had given Abraham flocks of sheep and goats, cattle, silver and gold, male and female slaves, camels and donkeys.

He went on to say that Abraham’s wife, Sarah bore him a son when he was old and he had given everything he owned to his son.

He narrated how Abraham made him promise with a vow that he wouldn’t choose a wife for his son Isaac from the young women in Canaan. He said that Abraham asked him to go to his relatives and choose a wife for his son.

The servant said that when he asked his master Abraham what he would do if the girl wouldn’t come with him. Abraham said, “The LORD, whom I have always obeyed, will send his angel with you and give you success. You will get for my son a wife from my own people, from my father's family.

There is only one way for you to be free from your vow: if you go to my relatives and they refuse you, then you will be free.”

Continuing his story, Abraham’s servant told them all that happened when he got to the well where he met Rebecca.

He concluded, “Now, if you intend to fulfill your responsibility toward my master and treat him fairly, please tell me. If not, say so, and I will decide what to do.”

Labans and Bethuel’s Response

Laban and his father, Bethuel told Abraham’s servant that since the matter came from God, they weren’t in a position to make a decision. They told him to take Rebecca and let her become the wife of Abraham’s son.

Gifts for Rebecca and Her Relatives

When Abraham’s servant heard this, he bowed down and worshiped God. He gave gifts of clothing, silver and gold jewelry to Rebecca. He also gave costly gifts to Rebecca’s brother and her mother.

After this, Abraham’s servant and his men ate their meal and drank. They spent the night there.

Abraham’s Servant Prepares To Return Home

Early next morning, Abraham’s servant asked Rebecca’s relatives to let him go back to his master, Abraham.

But Rebecca’s brother, Laban and her mother told him to allow Rebecca stay with them at least ten days before going with him.

Abraham’s servant told them not to delay him since God had made his journey successful. But they said that they would call Rebecca and find out what she would say about the matter.

When they called Rebecca, they asked her, “Do you want to go with this man?”

“Yes.” she answered.

So they let her and her old family servant go with Abraham’s servant and his men. They blessed Rebecca saying, “May you, sister, become the mother of millions! May your descendants conquer the cities of their enemies!”

Rebecca and her servant girls mounted their camels and followed Abraham’s servant.

Isaac Meets His Wife, Rebecca

Isaac was staying in the southern part of Canaan. He had come into the wilderness of “The Well of the Living One Who Sees Me”.

One early morning, he went out for a walk in the fields and saw camels coming.

When Rebecca saw Isaac, she climbed down from her camel and asked Abraham’s servant who Isaac was. He told her that Isaac was his master. So she took her scarf and covered her face.

The servant met Isaac and reported to him everything that had happened. Then Isaac brought Rebecca into the tent where his mother Sarah had lived in. Rebecca became his wife and she was a special comfort to him after the death of his mother.

Genesis 21:1-8; 24:1-26

Questions:
• Who was Abraham’s son?
• Whom did Abraham tell to make a vow to get Isaac a proper wife?
• Where did Abraham tell his servant that he didn’t want Isaac to marry from?
• Why did Abraham tell his servant not to take Isaac back to Abraham’s home country?
• What could make Abraham’s servant free from the vow he made to him?
• Who was the girl who came to draw water from a well when Abraham’s servant was there?
• What gifts did Abraham’s servant give to Rebecca after she gave him water to drink and watered his animals?
• What did Abraham’s servant do when he realized that Rebecca was the daughter of Abraham’s relative?
• What were the names of Rebecca’s father and brother?
• What did Rebecca do when she saw Isaac?
• Into whose tent did Isaac take Rebecca?dumamahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11143830068352858567noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5248422437746175479.post-76190483371673219062009-03-14T15:43:00.000-07:002009-03-14T15:50:44.799-07:00Bible Story - A Man to Kill His Only Son as Sacrifice <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html;
